“How could we talk about beauty, the body and desire without thinking in terms of the categories ‘man’ or ‘woman’?”
Reminiscence
What is a beautiful, desirable body? Every era, every culture has had its ideals of beauty. These ideals are almost always based on the binary classification of “male” and “female”. To this day, this remains a central practice in large parts of our society. People who cannot or do not want to fit into the binary or heteronormative gender order find little resonance in this standardised worldview. This simplifies the complexity of our society and excludes entire population groups. But how can we talk about beauty, bodies and desire without thinking in terms of categories such as “man” or “woman”?
The series “Reminiscence” is an attempt to answer this question. It consists of abstract sculptures that take on a physical appearance through the interplay of volume, contour, direction and surface. Without attempting to imitate human body parts, the figures radiate their own kind of eroticism. The silky matt texture of the surface and partial applications of real hair invite touch. Free, flowing forms curve inwards and outwards. These sculptures have no front and no back, no right and no wrong. This reflects the view that sexuality, gender and desire are a spectrum and not a switch.
